18th Century French Giltwood Mirror

18th century
Description

An 18th century French mirror with original mercury plate housed in a gilt wood frame. The detail of the carved decoration is superb with scrolls and shells to the cresting and base of the mirror, together with twisted stems and roses to the sides. The gilding is soft and mellow. The plate has aged with time but this adds to the decorative appeal of this early mirror and the reflection is still very good.

A beautiful antique mirror with proportions that make it easy to place in any interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The French Rococo style, prominent during the reign of Louis XV, is characterised by elaborate asymmetry, flowing C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, and shell-like rocaille motifs carved into wood frames and finished in gold leaf.

These frames were constructed from hand-carved timber coated in layers of gesso and bole clay before micro-thin gold leaf was burnished onto the surface, surrounding early mercury-silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joints, visible wood carving tool marks on the reverse, natural foxing or oxidisation in the glass, and red or grey bole clay showing through areas of worn gilt.

Positioning an ornate giltwood mirror against a neutral wall or pairing it with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a strong visual contrast, making it an effective focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard.

Dust the carved frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve traditional water-gilding gesso layers.
