Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian hallstand is a decorative piece from the Aesthetic Movement, designed for a hallway or entryway to organise coats, hats, and umbrellas. It has a dark brown finish with natural timber grain, featuring a fan-shaped central mirror at the top, multiple turned bamboo pegs, and a diamond-shaped ceramic tile inset with blue and yellow floral motifs. The structure includes integrated stick-stand compartments at the mid-level with a small central drawer fitted with a metal pull handle, and two lower green metal drip trays flanking a central panel above feet resting on the ground. Measuring approximately 190 cm tall by 95 cm wide, it provides substantial storage while maintaining a slim profile against a wall. The piece shows surface wear consistent with age, including scuffs and fading to the dark timber finish and aged spotting on the mirror glass. It serves as a functional and decorative furniture item for an entryway, hallway, or boot room in a modern home.

FAQs

Popularised during the late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement, bamboo hallstands are entryway furniture pieces designed to store coats, hats, and umbrellas while reflecting Japonisme design influences.

These pieces were constructed using bamboo canes joined with lacquer or wooden dowels, often incorporating ceramic tiles, lacquered panels, mirrors, and cast metal drip trays.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved bamboo nodes, original metal drip trays in the base compartments, hand-painted or transfer-printed ceramic tiles, and period bevelled mirrors.

Position the hallstand in a foyer or hallway to provide functional storage, pairing the natural bamboo texture with potted botanical elements and neutral wall colours.

Dust the bamboo frame regularly with a dry brush or soft cloth, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent split canes, and polish gently with natural beeswax.
