Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Octagonal Work / Lamp Table Sewing Table with Silk Basket

1900 - 1920
Description

A very elegant antique octagonal work / lamp table in mahogany with fine satinwood style inlay to the top, centred by a small fan patera and raised on slender square tapering legs joined by a shaped undertier with turned finial. Beneath sits the original suspended silk work bag, currently fitted in place but able to be removed if preferred, and the hinged top opens to a fitted interior with divided compartments and a central lidded section.

Pieces like this were made as ladies’ work tables and would have been used for sewing, embroidery, mending and the keeping of small domestic items neatly to hand in the drawing room or bedroom. The silk basket was designed to hold fabrics, threads and ongoing work, and the option to remove it offers flexibility for modern use. Today it also works beautifully as a decorative side table, occasional table or bedside piece while still retaining its original purpose and charm.

The octagonal form is particularly attractive, and the combination of inlaid top, delicate under-frame and fitted interior gives it a refined look that is both practical and decorative. The interior arrangement is especially appealing, offering a glimpse into how carefully these pieces were designed for everyday use.

Condition report: Nicely aged overall with light surface wear, marks and scratches to the top consistent with age and use. The inlay remains attractive and the interior is clean and presentable. The silk basket is a lovely survival and adds greatly to the character of the piece, with expected age-related wear. The basket is currently attached but can be removed if desired.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910), an Edwardian sewing table, or work table, is a specialised piece of occasional furniture designed to house needlework tools and textiles, often featuring a fitted drawer or suspended fabric basket.

These tables were commonly crafted from fine woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, featuring decorative marquetry inlays, brass locks, and original silk or velvet fabric pleated baskets underneath to hold yarn and fabric.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, genuine wood marquetry rather than printed veneers, period-appropriate brass hardware, and light, elegant proportioning typical of early 20th-century cabinetry.

Functioning as an elegant side table, nightstand, or decorative accent in a reading nook, these compact tables add historic character to modern interiors while offering discrete storage.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, apply high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, keep away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and gently vacuum fabric elements using a soft brush attachment.
