Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Provincial clerks desk dates from 1880 and functions as a hotel restaurant reception greeting station or a characterful writing desk in a home study. Built from solid oak in a warm honey brown colour, the piece has a slanted hinged writing surface with visible grain patterns, metal hinges at the top edge, and a raised gallery shelf supported by shaped uprights at the back. The understructure incorporates a narrow frieze drawer fitted with a central keyhole escutcheon above four turned legs adorned with delicate fluted detailing and ring turnings. Standing 104 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 72 cm deep, the proportions suit placement as a reception console in an entrance hallway or as a traditional freestanding writing desk. The solid timber construction displays natural warmth and traditional joinery, making it a functional workspace that brings historical French provincial character to a modern interior.

FAQs

Clerk desks were traditionally designed for accounting, record-keeping, and administrative work in commercial establishments, hotels, and offices. The slanted surface allowed accounting ledgers or writing sheets to sit at an ergonomic angle for someone working whilst standing or seated on a tall stool.

These pieces were commonly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Construction often incorporated mortise and tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails inside the lid storage compartments, and turned legs turned on a lathe for structural stability.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including irregular dovetail joints, original iron or brass hardware, authentic surface patina, and uneven wear consistent with prolonged standing usage along the lower frame or footrests.

In contemporary settings, a clerk desk functions effectively as an entryway greeting station, a host desk in commercial hospitality environments, or an elevated display lectern in a home library or study space.

Preserve the natural timber by regularly dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year. Keep the desk clear of direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or dry splitting.
