This seventeenth-century William and Mary side table is constructed from dark brown oak. The rectangular two-plank cleated top sits above a single frieze drawer fitted with brass drop handles featuring flower-shaped backplates. Ring-turned legs support the structure, united by a lower box stretcher with pegged joinery visible throughout. The timber shows a warm patina developed through centuries of use. Measuring 58.5 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 50.3 cm deep, the table fits naturally beside a sofa or chair in a living space as a surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. Its compact proportions allow placement in hallways, studies, or bedrooms where a sturdy small wooden table is required.

Clean surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and nourish the wood twice a year with clear beeswax, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels.

Contrast the dark patina of historical oak against light, neutral walls, and pair the table with contemporary ceramic lamps, abstract artwork, or subtle linen textiles to create balance.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planing on the underside, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery with visible wooden pegs, original brass tear-drop handles, and natural surface wear to the lower stretchers.

Tables from this period were crafted primarily from solid English oak, held together with wooden dowels and pegged joints, and fitted with hand-cast brass hardware and low perimeter stretchers.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, William and Mary furniture reflects Dutch and French influences, recognised by slim proportions, intricate wood turnings, dark timber finishes, and decorative drop handles.
