Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror, or pier glass, was traditionally designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to occupy the wall space between two windows. Its architectural purpose was to reflect natural light back into the room and visually extend the interior space.

These mirrors typically feature a carved wooden frame coated in gesso and finished with thin gold leaf, applied via water gilding or oil gilding techniques. The reflective plate was historically produced using glass backed with a tin and mercury coating.

Authentic period pieces display natural age marks on the glass, known as foxing or desilvering, caused by the oxidisation of the metallic backing. The reverse side usually features hand-sawn timber backboards and dark patina where original gilding has worn away.

A tall pier mirror functions well when placed above a console table in a hallway or mounted on a narrow wall between window openings to capture light. The structured gilt frame adds architectural interest and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Avoid applying liquid cleaners directly to the gilt frame, as water can dissolve the underlying gesso and gold leaf. Dust the relief carving gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush and clean the glass plate using a slightly damp microfibre cloth.
