This English Staffordshire jug dates from the late 18th century and is formed with sharply defined hexagonal facets, a characteristic shape of the late Georgian period. The thin glaze and overall finish are consistent with quality English ceramics of the time.
The decoration is entirely hand-painted, featuring an oriental genre scene with turbaned figures set in an imagined Eastern setting, complemented by delicate floral sprays in the “Indische Blumen” palette. Such decoration reflects contemporary English interest in exotic subjects and precedes the dominance of printed wares.
The underside shows an incised technological mark, a normal feature of period production. Examples combining this form and fully hand-painted decoration are now increasingly scarce.
