This French Rococo style console table and mirror set dates from the late 19th Century. The set comprises a gilded pier mirror and a matching console table, both finished in gold with rich C-scroll carvings, acanthus leaf cresting, and cabriole legs. The table has a serpentine white marble top resting above an openwork carved frieze, while the mirror features an elaborate arched frame with a central top finial and flat base. The set measures 228 cm high, 146 cm wide, and 45 cm deep overall, with the table standing 81 cm high. In a contemporary home, this matched set functions as a decorative statement piece in an entrance hall or living room, where the table provides a narrow surface for display items beneath the wall-mounted mirror. The gilded woodwork creates a bright reflective accent against neutral walls, and the marble top offers a durable surface suited for daily use in domestic spaces.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France, Rococo style furniture features elaborate carved ornamentation, including C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and asymmetrical curves. Pier sets comprising a console table and matching wall mirror were traditionally placed on narrow wall spaces between windows to reflect natural light.

These sets were typically crafted from hand-carved wood, such as lime or pine, coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. Tops were frequently fashioned from contoured white or variegated marble to create a durable surface over the carved apron.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving, natural wood movement, and hand-applied water gilding showing subtle red or grey bole beneath worn areas. Examination of the frame rear reveals hand-cut joinery, iron fixings, and age-related oxidisation.

Position the pair in an entrance hall or foyer to create a primary visual focal point. The carved gilded frame offers strong texture against plain neutral walls or deep rich paint shades, requiring minimal additional accessories.

Dust the gilded framework using a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids that dissolve water gilding. Clean marble tops using a damp pH-neutral cloth and dry the surface immediately to prevent staining.
