Jean Lachaud (full name Adolphe Jean Lachaud) was a French painter, engraver, ceramist, decorator, teacher and museum curator best known for his contributions to Breton art in the first half of the 20th century.
?? Early Life and Education
• He was born on 27 December 1882 in Paris (18th arrondissement).
• Lachaud earned a bachelor’s degree in literature and attended the Lycée Condorcet in Paris.
• He studied painting and graphic arts at the École nationale des Beaux-arts and later at the Académie Julian.
?? Artistic Beginnings
• In 1908, while still a student, he discovered Brittany during family stays in Pont-Aven, a town famous for its artist colony.
• His early career was interrupted by World War I, during which he served in the French Air Force and later as an instructor attached to the American Army.
??? Career and Artistic Work
• After being demobilized in 1919, Lachaud settled in Névez near Pont-Aven until 1934, forming friendships with key artists of the Pont-Aven circle and other contemporary painters.
• His first wood engravings were exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1921, and in 1923 he began producing ceramics at the Henriot faience works in Quimper.
• He was active in both painting and decorative arts, working in oil, watercolour, gouache, wood engraving and design, and covering subjects ranging from seascapes and landscapes to portraits and everyday Breton life.
• In 1933, he formally dropped his first name Adolphe and signed his work simply as Jean Lachaud.
??? Roles in Art Institutions
• In 1934, Lachaud founded the Union artistique de Quimper and became a member of influential Paris salons including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de l’art français indépendant.
• In 1936, he was appointed curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brest and director of the École des Beaux-Arts there. He notably organized the rescue of the museum’s collections at the outbreak of World War II.
?? Legacy
• Lachaud’s work is held in several Breton museums, including Pont-Aven, Quimper, and Brest collections, and his art often reflects a blend of traditional Breton culture and modern regional artistic expression.
• Beyond paintings and ceramics, he also decorated interiors, furniture and tableware, most famously designing earthenware motifs for the Relais Saint Corentin restaurant in Quimper, manufactured by the HB faience factory.
