This style is characterised by intricate wood-inlay patterns depicting floral or geometric motifs, often drawing inspiration from earlier Louis XV and Louis XVI designs with serpentine fronts and curved cabriole legs.

Authentic pieces typically feature a carcase of oak or pine veneered with exotic and native hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and satinwood, assembled using traditional hand-cut dovetails and hand-cast gilt bronze or brass mounts.

Authentication involves examining the underside and drawer linings for hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing, natural ageing of the wood and veneers, and the quality of the cast bronze hardware rather than modern mass-produced fixings.

It functions effectively as a focal point in a living room or hallway, paired with contemporary minimalist artwork or a simple mirror to balance the ornate detail of the wood inlay.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional traditional beeswax polish, and avoiding synthetic cleaning agents to protect the delicate veneer.
