This Victorian campaign washstand dates from circa 1880 and takes the form of a three-tiered stand. The structure comprises rich dark brown oval mahogany shelves framed by low brass gallery rims, separated by turned brass support columns topped with pointed finials and resting on small ball feet. The polished timber surfaces show subtle surface wear consistent with age, while the modular design incorporates uprights that unscrew for flat-packing. Measuring 85 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, the unit functions well in a home today as a drinks trolley, entryway console, plant stand, or compact bathroom vanity positioned in an empty room corner.

FAQs

A campaign washstand is a demountable or compact piece of furniture designed during the nineteenth century for military officers and travellers, serving as a portable wash station.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or teak, paired with brass support columns, threaded fixings, and gallery edges to withstand travel.

Authentic examples feature threaded brass joinery, original brass gallery rims, age-appropriate patination on metal components, and solid timber construction without modern screws or synthetic glues.

A tiered washstand functions effectively as a multi-level occasional table, a side table beside seating, or a compact display unit in a hallway or bathroom.

Dust wood surfaces regularly using a clean lint-free cloth, apply natural beeswax periodically to protect the timber, and clean brass gently without removing the aged surface patination.
