Description

A wonderful antique mahogany occasional side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period, with an Arts and Crafts element of design.

It is of very fine quality, the top has a beautiful shape with lovely sweeping serpentine shaped edges. The legs are elegant yet sturdy, there is beautiful pierced fretwork at the top angles where they meet the top edge.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some extremely minor wear and patina remaining here and there beneath the polish.

Occasional tables gained widespread popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as versatile, movable pieces designed for specific minor functions like holding lamps, books, or tea.

Authentic period pieces are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring hand-cut joinery, turned supports, and polished timber veneers.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetails or peg joints, natural wax patina, and consistency of wear patterns appropriate to the age of the item.

An antique occasional table provides functional surface area and historical contrast when placed beside a modern sofa or used as a standalone display pedestal in a minimalist setting.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking.
