Description

Super quality and of a good size, this late Regency rosewood hanging or table top bookcase / bookshelf, circa 1830.

Beautifully made throughout, even the shelf supports are superb!

Shown with one shelf fitted, but there are two if you were to use this for smaller display items.

Would sit very well on top of a sideboard, could work very well holding a display of cut glass or decanters, or as originally intended, for books!

Measuring:

22 inches or 56 cm high

51 inches or 129.5 cm wide

8 inches or 20 cm deep.

7 1/4 inches or 18.5 cm shelf depth

FAQs

A Victorian hanging bookcase is a wall-mounted shelving unit designed to hold books and display objects, typically featuring adjustable shelves and decorative woodwork typical of the 19th century.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring fine grain patterns and turned wooden supports.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, hand-cut screws or slots, the presence of natural ageing in the timber, and period-specific hardware or ratchet mechanisms for shelf adjustment.

Mounting the piece on a neutral wall allows the rich timber grain to stand out, pairing well with curated hardback books, ceramics, and structural objects for a balanced display.

Preserve the timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive humidity, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
