This nineteenth-century Victorian Canterbury is fashioned from dark brown rosewood with brass and ceramic fittings. The piece comprises four slatted upper compartments with foliate scroll pierced fretwork side panels, positioned above a single base drawer fitted with two small turned knob handles. The lower section stands on short turned baluster legs terminating in brass castors with white ceramic wheels. The timber displays a warm polish and visible grain throughout the structure. Measuring 53 cm high, 61 cm wide and 38.5 cm deep, the unit provides compact bedside or living room storage. It fits neatly at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to hold magazines, newspapers or periodicals within easy reach in a traditional or modern study or lounge setting.

Originally designed in the late 18th century, a Canterbury is a low, compartmentalised wooden stand used primarily for storing sheet music, periodicals, or prints.

High-quality hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut were typically used, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass castors, and carved fretwork dividers.

Look for distinctive rosewood grain patterns, hand-turned legs, original brass castors with ceramic or metal wheels, and hand-planed drawer construction.

Position the piece adjacent to an armchair or sofa to store contemporary periodicals, oversized art books, or vinyl records while providing historical texture.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement.
