Karaja Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

I love Karaja rugs, they have strong palettes and are always very usable pieces with their robust cotton foundation. This one is interesting, the two outer medallions are typical of Karaja pieces but the central one is borrowed from the Chelaberd or eagle Kazak rug. Designs travel but foundation and palette are often very localised. Both in this case state Karaja but it is fascinating to see the merging of imagery from the Caucasus. Sometimes it is the detail that attracts me to a particular piece, in this case the reciprocal blue border and the way it contrasts with the red field is very pleasing. A good old rug with an unusual mix of designs.

Good Condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the village of Karajeh in northwestern Iran, near the Heriz region. They are distinguished by their geometric motifs, typically featuring a central latch-hooked or star-shaped medallion flanked by two distinct secondary medallions along a central axis.

Traditionally hand-knotted using wool pile tied onto a cotton or wool warp and weft, Karaja rugs utilise natural vegetable dyes. The weaving process creates a durable, dense pile suited for high-traffic areas.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool variations, subtle dye abrashes, and a flexible handle. Look for the characteristic three-medallion layout on a deep red or terracotta field with contrasting ivory, navy, and green accents.

An antique tribal rug serves as a foundational focal point, adding warm colour and geometric structure to contemporary spaces. It pairs effectively with natural timber, leather upholstery, or neutral stone flooring.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the fibres with a rotating beater bar. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, and employ professional rug cleaning specialists for deep maintenance.
