The Canterbury originated in the late 18th century in England, traditionally used for holding sheet music, books, or folios, and is named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned an early example.

Authentic period pieces are typically crafted from dense timbers like mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, slatted dividers, and often incorporating brass castors and turned legs.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, patination, hand-cut dovetails in any drawers, original brass hardware, and construction methods consistent with early 19th-century cabinet making.

It functions well as a practical side table next to a sofa or armchair, serving to hold current reading materials, art books, or vinyl records while adding traditional warmth to modern spaces.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, and treat it periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
