Description

A fine quality pair of hexagonal panel antique vases. Very high quality decoration shows peacocks and small birds among flowers including peonies and wisteria. The gilding is in very good condition. The decoration continues up through the vase shoulders and there is a cicada wing frieze around the bottom. Typically Japanese these are a matched pair but with different scenes. Three character mark and Satsuma mon. We have taken pictures in both artificial and daylight.

Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or scratches. Buy with confidence.

Japanese Satsuma earthenware originated in the Satsuma domain in Southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its light cream earthenware body, fine crackle glaze, and detailed polychrome enamel and gilt decoration.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from local clay fired at lower temperatures to produce a porous earthenware body. The surface is coated in a transparent glaze that develops micro-crackling, which is subsequently hand-painted with overglaze enamel pigments and gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces frequently bear makers marks on the base, such as the Shimazu family crest consisting of a cross within a circle. Examination of the weight, precision of the hand-painted enamels, condition of the gilding, and micro-crazing pattern helps identify period items from modern mass reproductions.

These decorative ceramics function as focal points when displayed as a pair on sideboards, consoles, or mantelpieces. The cream ground tone and gilt details complement traditional dark mahogany, lacquered surfaces, and layered eclectic design schemes.
