Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A settle is a traditional wooden bench designed with a tall backrest and solid sides, originating in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. Its high-panelled structure was primarily functional, crafted to block cold drafts in unheated homes, inns, and taverns while reflecting warmth from an open fireside back toward the sitters.

Historic settles were commonly constructed from native softwoods such as pine, using hand-planed tongue-and-groove vertical planking for the backrest. Construction features mortise and tenon joinery, secured with wooden dowels or hand-forged iron nails to ensure structural durability.

Authentic period settles exhibit uneven surface textures from hand-planing, natural timber shrinkage around joint lines, and honest wear on the footrests and seat. Look for natural oxidisation of the pine wood, which darkens to a warm amber or honey shade over extended periods, alongside historical marks or original fastenings.

A high back settle functions effectively in large entryways, boot rooms, or open-plan kitchens to anchor a seating area. Styling can include modern woven cushions, linen throws, or placing the bench behind a freestanding dining table to create a banquette seating layout.

Maintain pine furniture by applying a quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve moisture and prevent timber drying. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources such as modern radiators or active fireplaces, as sudden humidity shifts can induce timber warping or splitting.
