Description

A wonderful antique Victorian marble top mahogany cylinder pedestal cabinet. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1850 period.

It is of great quality, with a smart and useful design. The cylindrical shaped body sits on a plinth base with a beautifully moulded top edge. There is an inset white marble top surface, the built in door covers around half of the base and opens to reveal a single shelf storage space. This is a great size for use as a bedside cabinet or lamp table in any setting around the home.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are just some minor marks here and there remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian furniture is characterised by a revival of historical epochs combined with industrial manufacturing techniques, frequently featuring solid timber construction, classical proportions, and functional interiors designed for domestic organisation.

Cabinet makers of the Victorian era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, often paired with inset white marble tops to provide a durable, heat-resistant surface for washing equipment or displaying decorative objects.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional wood shrinkage patterns, natural wax patination, and hardware consistent with mid-to-late nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

An antique pedestal serves effectively as a sculptural accent piece, functioning as a plant stand, bedside table, or plinth for contemporary sculptures to create a contrasting juxtaposition of historic and modern elements.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, coupled with occasional applications of natural beeswax to nourish the timber and protect the original polish.
