Ebonised & Giltwood Mirror Napoleon III Second Empire

19th century
For Sale by Pyrontique
Description

Ebonised & Giltwood Mirror Napoleon III Second Empire

Sourced from the Basque region of South West France, this handsome mirror features a raised crest with elegant acanthus leaf and floral decoration.

It has profuse decoration with three bands of repeated patterns.

The mirror plate is original with very minor marks and light foxing. While there are minor age-related losses to the decorative gesso, these subtle imperfections contribute to the mirror's character and they do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece.

The mirror will be crated for shipping.

Shipping will be £50 for delivery to an address in England, France, Germany and Italy.

We can provide quotes to the rest of the UK, Europe and worldwide

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Napoleon III mirrors originate from mid-nineteenth-century France during the Second Empire. The style is recognised for eclectic revivals, featuring strong contrasts such as dark ebonised timber combined with intricate gilded ornamentation and decorative crestings.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from solid carved wood or plaster composition on timber. Finishings involved water-gilding using real gold leaf alongside hand-applied black lacquer or ebonised wood stains.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidisation, slight wear to the gilding showing red bole beneath, and heavy joinery construction on the reverse wooden backing.

The contrast of black and gold works well above a mantlepiece, console table, or side cabinet. It creates a focal point against both neutral backdrop walls and dark dark-academia colour schemes.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft feather duster or dry microfibre cloth to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Avoid harsh chemical sprays, liquid solvents, or abrasive moisture on water-gilded areas.
