Regency overmantel mirrors are defined by classical architectural symmetry, fluted columns, and decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves or palmettes. Produced in the early nineteenth century, these mirrors feature horizontal proportions designed specifically to sit directly above a drawing room mantelpiece.

These mirrors were constructed from carved pine or lime wood substrates, often finished with gesso and hand-applied gold leaf gilding. Many designs incorporated ebonised inner slips and mirror plates made of silvered or mercury-backed glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural wear or rubbing to the gilding showing red bole underneath, and light foxing or oxidation spots on the original mirror glass.
