Pier mirrors were designed to occupy the wall space between windows, known as a pier, to reflect light into a room. The Egyptian Revival style gained prominence in western Europe following Napoleons Egyptian Campaign in 1798, leading to the integration of pharaoh heads, lotus motifs, and columns into neoclassic architecture and furniture.

These pieces were typically crafted with softwood frames coated in gesso, which was hand-carved or moulded with decorative details before application of gold leaf gilding. The mirror plate was composed of glass coated with a silvering or mercury backing.

Authentic period mirrors display signs of natural wear to the gilding, often exposing the reddish or dark clay bole underneath the gold leaf. The reverse side usually features hand-sawn pine or oak backing boards, and the original glass plate may show slight dark spotting or oxidisation along the edges.

A gilt pier mirror can serve as an architectural focal point when positioned above a mantlepiece, situated in an entryway over a console table, or hung in a narrow alcove. The metallic gold finish creates contrast when paired against contemporary flat-painted walls or minimalist furnishings.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or polishes that can lift gold leaf or soften the gesso underneath. Clean the mirror glass with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, taking care to keep moisture away from the frame edges.
