Originating in Britain during the early 19th century, Regency mirrors draw heavy inspiration from Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity. Characterised by balanced symmetry, architectural moulding, and water-gilded finishes, these mirrors frequently incorporated pilasters, classical friezes, or painted glass panels to emphasize height and splendour in formal reception rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood coated with layers of gesso and clay bole before gold leaf was applied using water gilding. Mirror plates were made from glass coated with a mercury-tin amalgam, while decorative upper friezes often featured hand-painted artwork or verre eglomise, a technique where gold leaf is applied and etched onto the back of glass.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery on the backboard, dark foxing and oxidisation spots on the original mercury glass plate, and subtle wear to the gilt surface exposing reddish-brown clay bole beneath. The glass panel artwork should show hand-painted detailing and natural age crazing under magnification.
