Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian parcel-gilt mirror features a frame where specific carved elements or mouldings are selectively gilded while the main structure remains dark, stained, or ebonised. This contrasting finish drew heavily on 19th-century Neoclassical and French design influences.

These frames were typically constructed from carved timber or composition moulding over a wooden core, treated with gesso, and selectively hand-gilded with gold leaf over a dark painted or ebonised base.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit natural wear to the gilded high points, slight craquelure in the gesso, and desilvering or light foxing on the glass. The reverse typically features hand-sawn wooden backing boards fastened with original period fixings.

Mount the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create visual contrast between crisp modern architectural lines and detailed historical mouldings. The black and gold palette integrates smoothly into monochromatic or richly painted rooms.

Dust the delicate relief carvings gently using a dry, soft brush rather than dusting cloths, which can snag fragile floral swags. Avoid chemical sprays, liquid cleaners, or water, as moisture can compromise the underlying gesso and loosen the gold leaf.
