Giltwood mirrors from the Baroque and Rococo periods are characterised by elaborate hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso and covered with fine gold leaf. They typically feature dramatic architectural elements such as cresting pediments, C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs designed to capture and reflect light.

Traditional mirrors utilized hand-carved timber frames, often pine or oak, sealed with layers of gesso paste made from chalk and animal glue. Red or yellow bole clay was applied beneath thin gold leaf layers, whilst the reflective glass was silvered using mercury amalgams or early chemical silvering techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle signs of wear, such as the reddish underlying bole showing through worn gold leaf, known as rub-through.
