Victorian gilt mirrors are characterised by ornate timber frames coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf. Popular during the 19th century, these designs frequently feature decorative mouldings such as floral motifs, scrolling foliage, rope trim, and beaded borders.

The core frame was typically constructed from softwood such as pine, covered with a layer of gesso, a plaster-like material used for carving or moulding details. Gold leaf was applied over a clay base known as bole, while the mirror plate was made from thick silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces often show signs of age such as slight flaking or cracking in the gesso, gentle rubbing that reveals the reddish or grey clay bole beneath the gilding, dark spots or light haze on the original silvered glass plate, and hand-cut wood backing boards.
