Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bentwood furniture gained prominence in the mid-to-late 19th century through pioneers like Michael Thonet, who perfected the steam-bending technique. Coat stands crafted in this manner became ubiquitous in European entryways and cafes during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras due to their lightweight strength and curvilinear forms.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid beech wood, which becomes pliable when exposed to pressurized steam. The wood was bent into metal moulds, dried, and assembled using direct bolt and screw fixings rather than traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces often feature maker paper labels or heat-stamped logos near the underside of the base or umbrella ring. Additionally, original items display subtle variations in steam-bent curves, original metal bolt fixings, and natural surface wear around the hooks and lower base.

Position the piece in an entryway or hallway to serve as both functional storage and a sculptural architectural focal point. It can be paired with neutral walls, minimalist coat hangers, or a traditional umbrella stand tray to balance historic character with contemporary functionality.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent splitting or joint loosening. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish to preserve the original finish and timber moisture.
