Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tiered wall shelves and etageres gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as decorative display solutions for ceramics, books, and small household curios. They were designed to maximise vertical space while adding decorative interest to drawing rooms and hallways.

Craftsmen typically constructed these shelves using hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often combined with cast or turned brass uprights. Painted finishes were also applied over timber bases to align with period interior trends.

Authentic period examples often feature hand-cut joinery, original brass mounting fixings with natural oxidisation, and hand-turned spiral or rope-twist columns. Natural wear along painted edges and dark patina on exposed timber underneath are common indicators of age.

Mount the shelves against a neutral painted wall to highlight the brass structure and silhouette. Arrange small collections of ceramics, framed miniature artworks, or trailing indoor plants across the tiers to balance visual weight.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using harsh chemical spray cleaners. Keep brass components unpolished if natural patina is preferred, or gently clean with a soft dry brush to prevent dirt buildup.
