This Victorian side table dates from 1880 and comes in an English Country House style. Constructed from pine and hardwood, it displays a warm brown finish throughout its wooden surfaces. The piece includes a tray top, two drawers fitted with round wooden knobs, bobbin-turned legs, and a turned stretcher. Visible details include a gilded edge on the leather top, organised sections within the top drawer, and fine turned woodwork. The table measures 73 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. It works well today placed at the end of a sofa, in a hallway, or as a functional side table.

FAQs

Bobbin-turned furniture features decorative legs, stretchers, or spindles shaped on a lathe to resemble a series of spools or bobbins stacked together. Popularised in the seventeenth century, this woodworking style experienced major revivals during the Victorian period.

Victorian side tables were primarily crafted from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, walnut, pine, and various fruitwoods. Internal drawer linings were frequently constructed from pine or secondary softwoods with hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic period pieces display subtle variations in the bobbin turnings caused by manual lathe operation. Additional indicators include hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original wooden knob fixings, and natural surface patination around high-touch areas.

A Victorian bobbin table functions effectively as an end table beside a sofa, a compact desk companion, or a nightstand in a bedroom. The repeating turned wood motif provides visual texture when contrasted against modern upholstered furniture.

Routine care involves dusting the woodwork with a dry microfibre cloth along the turned detail. Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice annually to preserve the timber, avoiding direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent moisture loss.
