Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Medullary rays on the top: quarter-sawn oak cut across the grain rings.
Carved female term figures: late Victorian fondness for Jacobean and Renaissance ornament.
Fluted stepped feet with turned roundels: late nineteenth-century decorative detailing.
Darkened wax in the recesses: decades of handling and cleaning.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th Century oak torchere stand is rendered in a Victorian and Gothic style with a dark brown timber finish and stands 88 cm high, 29 cm wide and 29 cm deep. The piece comprises a moulded square top featuring reeded borders and indented corners, supported by a central column with hand-carved figurative caryatid details at each corner and intricate floral carvings down the panels. The structure rests on a stepped base with reeded feet and additional carved ornamentation. In a contemporary interior, this stand serves as a plinth for displaying a lamp, a bust, or a decorative plant in an empty corner. The dark oak material displays visible grain patterns and deep tonal variations across the carved surfaces, complementing traditional or eclectic spaces.

FAQs

Originally designed to hold tall candelabra or torches, a torchere evolved into a raised decorative stand used to elevate indoor plants, sculptures, or oil lamps.

Victorian torcheres were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring heavy hand-carving and mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic nineteenth-century pedestals exhibit hand-tool marks, natural ageing or patination within the oak grain, and structural wear consistent with historical use.

A carved torchere works well in an entryway, corner, or alcove to showcase a trailing houseplant, ceramic vessel, or statement sculpture while adding vertical height.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax paste polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
