Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical gilded wall mirrors from the 19th century are characterised by symmetrical rectangular forms inspired by classical antiquity. They feature decorative trim mouldings such as Greek key patterns, bead-and-reel details, and water-gilded or oil-gilded finishes over plaster or timber backings.

These mirrors were typically crafted using softwoods or hardwoods carved with decorative mouldings, often coated with gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of genuine gold leaf were then applied over the bole and burnished, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut timber joinery on the backboard, signs of natural silvering degradation or mild foxing on the glass, and subtle wear to the gold leaf where the underlying reddish clay bole shows through.

A large gilded mirror functions as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table. The metallic gilding provides warm contrast against neutral walls and enhances natural ambient light.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water and liquid cleansers which dissolve gesso and ruin gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully by applying glass cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying the surface directly.
