Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century button-back suites typically feature deep buttoning or tufting across the backrest, upholstered rolled arms, and framed hardwood construction. Popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, these matching sets were designed to provide formal yet comfortable seating in domestic reception rooms.

These suites were constructed using solid timber frames, frequently mahogany, walnut, or oak. The upholstery utilised coil springs tied with jute webbing, padded with natural fillings like horsehair or fibre, and covered in heavy woven fabrics such as velvet, wool, or leather.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-stitched upholstery, deep diamond buttoning integrated into the frame structure, and hand-turned or tapered wooden legs. Examining the underside often reveals traditional jute webbing, tied metal springs, and original frame construction joints.

A classic button-back suite can be styled in modern settings by contrasting its traditional silhouette against clean-lined architecture, minimalist lighting, and neutral stone or wood surfaces. Incorporating modern side tables or contemporary art helps bridge the stylistic gap.

Velvet upholstery should be gently vacuumed regularly using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust from settling into the pile. Spills must be blotted immediately with a dry cloth rather than rubbed, and professional cleaning is recommended to protect the fabric weave.
