Victorian Walnut Canterbury Whatnot

19th century
Description

A beautifully crafted Victorian antique walnut Canterbury whatnot. The Canterbury whatnot has a decorative pierced gallery to the top, raised on turned upright supports. The lower section has two divides, creating three storage compartments above a single drawer to the base. Raised on four baluster turned legs with ceramic castors. Originally used for storing magazines and records, however we believe it can also function as a funky drinks trolley. A rather pleasing example, with delicate carvings and beautiful grain detail throughout.

Item Ref; M-4815

.

DIMENSIONS:

Height – 99.5cm / Width - 58cm / Depth - 44cm

.

CONDITION REPORT:

In excellent antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks and scratches to the surface top and storage compartments (pictured). There are minor splits to the veneer at the back (pictured), however this doesn’t affect the overall integrity of the product. The antique walnut Canterbury whatnot remains structurally solid and sound, with the drawer running well. Overall, a good example of its kind.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Canterbury whatnot is a hybrid piece of 19th-century English furniture that combines open display shelving with partitioned lower slats designed specifically to hold sheet music, bound volumes, or periodicals.

These pieces were typically crafted from cabinet-grade hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often featuring hand-turned spindle uprights, carved fretwork galleries, and brass castors with ceramic wheels.

Authentic pieces feature period construction details such as hand-dovetailed base drawers, original brass castors, precise hand-carved fretwork, and natural age-related patina on the walnut timber.

A Canterbury works as an accent piece beside an armchair or sofa to store magazines and books, or positioned near a desk or piano as an elegant record and sheet music holder.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and moisture sources, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and preserve the original finish.
