How do I fit modern mattresses to these beds?

Many vintage European and English bed frames accommodate standard modern mattress sizes with custom slat systems or base supports. Adjustments to length or width may be necessary depending on whether the bed uses standard British or continental dimensions. Consulting the internal measurements of the side rails ensures proper clearance before bedding is added. Traditional wooden side rails often require specific wooden slats dropped into position to support a contemporary mattress securely.

What is the difference between French and English styles?

French headboards and footboards frequently display carved Louis XV scrolling, Rococo Revival asymmetry, or dramatic parcel gilt accents. These designs tend to emphasise sweeping lines and prominent wooden crests. English Edwardian and Art Deco examples often showcase restrained geometry, figured veneers, or polished burr walnut surfaces. The distinction lies in the surface ornamentation and the structural silhouette of the woodwork.

How do I care for walnut veneer surfaces?

Maintaining walnut veneer involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or excessive moisture. Natural oils help preserve the finish without building up heavy wax residues. Protecting the wood from thermal changes prevents the underlying veneer from lifting or cracking over time. Gentle cleaning maintains the natural lustre of the figured grain.

Can I use just the headboard without the footboard?

Separating a headboard and footboard depends entirely on how the original side rails connect the two pieces. Many vintage beds rely on a rigid four-piece assembly where the footboard provides structural stability to the frame. Utilising the headboard independently requires assessing whether the mounting brackets are integrated into the headboard posts. Retaining the complete bedstead preserves the intended design balance created by the maker.
