How do I hang a heavy mount safely?

Wall sculptures and large taxidermy heads require secure fixings into structural brickwork or wall studs to support the weight. Utilising heavy-duty picture hooks or direct screw attachments ensures the wooden shield remains stable. Position the mount at eye level to replicate traditional country house display standards. Ensure the wall surface is dry and free from dampness to protect the wooden backing and natural materials.

What periods do these pieces represent?

The pieces span from the late Victorian period through the Edwardian era up to the nineteen-thirties. Victorian examples often reflect natural history collecting and detailed glass cases. Later Edwardian and twentieth-century items include large red deer stags and exotic antelopes mounted on oak shields. Each era displays distinct taxidermy methods and woodworking styles.

How should I clean taxidermy mounts?

Remove dust gently from the hide, fur, and antlers using a soft-bristled brush or a dry cloth. Avoid applying water, chemical cleaners, or polishes directly to the taxidermy materials. Glass cases protecting fish specimens should be cleaned with standard glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than the wood or seams. Regular dusting prevents the accumulation of particles within the fur.

Where were these pieces originally displayed?

Trophy mounts were traditionally hung in British country houses, Highland lodges, and sporting estates. They served as records of hunting expeditions and decorative elements in halls and studies. Today, these pieces transition easily into modern residential interiors as statement wall art. They provide texture and historical character to living spaces.
