What is a sutherland table?

A sutherland table is a specific type of drop leaf table with narrow central fixed top and wide leaves supported by swinging gate legs. They fold down into a very flat profile. Historically, they were created during the Victorian period to occupy minimal space in crowded drawing rooms until needed for tea or reading.

How do I date an edwardian piece?

Edwardian pieces generally date from the period between nineteen hundred and nineteen ten. They often feature lighter mahogany timbers and subtle satinwood inlay. Compare the construction methods and wood choice against standard Victorian heavier walnut or dark mahogany designs to spot the transition in aesthetic.

Where should I place one?

These tables suit tight spaces such as hallways, landings, or beside seating where a full table is too large. Keep the leaves folded down for everyday display. Raise the leaves when you need surface space for lamps, books, or drinks during gatherings.

Are they sturdy enough for daily use?

The slender legs and pivoting gate mechanism require careful handling rather than heavy downward pressure. They function best as occasional furniture. Ensure the swinging leg is fully extended and locked beneath the leaf before placing heavy objects on the edge.
