How do I clean an alabaster lamp?

Dust the stone gently with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid water and chemical solvents, which can penetrate and stain the porous surface. Keep the lamp away from damp environments to preserve the polished finish. Professional cleaning is recommended for stubborn marks.

Are these lamps heavy?

Solid stone construction makes these pieces significantly heavier than ceramic or wooden alternatives. Ensure your side table or desk can support the concentrated weight safely. The substantial base provides excellent stability against tipping. Lifting requires care due to the dense mineral mass.

How do I date a stone lamp?

Examine the stylistic details, such as classical Corinthian capitals or streamlined Art Deco silhouettes. Wiring components and mounting fixings also offer clues to the period of manufacture. French pieces from the early twentieth century often display specific gilt bronze mount styles. Compare the turning technique with known production eras.

Can I use modern light bulbs?

Most vintage lamps accept standard modern bulbs, provided the internal lampholder matches current sizing. Consult a qualified electrician to check the safety of older wiring. Low-heat LED bulbs protect internal stone structures and original shades from thermal stress. Ensure the wattage suits the vintage fittings.
