Where should I display a marble bust?

Library busts sit comfortably on heavy bookshelves, desks, or mantelpieces where their scale can be appreciated up close. Larger stone or marble pieces require sturdy pedestals or tables to support their substantial weight. Outdoor garden statuary belongs in sheltered courtyard corners or garden vistas where the stone can interact with natural weathering. Keeping indoor pieces away from direct heat sources protects the stone and any underlying mountings from stress.

What is the difference between cast stone and carved marble?

Carved marble is reduced directly from a solid block of natural stone by a sculptor using chisels and rasps. This method leaves unique tool marks and a singular grain pattern across the finished subject. Cast stone is formed by pouring a mixture of aggregate and binder into a mould to produce a repeatable shape. This technique was common for garden statuary and architectural ornaments rather than unique portrait studies.

Are these busts solid stone?

Many nineteenth and twentieth-century library and gallery busts consist of solid carved marble, alabaster, or stone. The weight of these pieces usually confirms whether the material continues solidly through the base. Plaster pieces and certain garden statuary utilise hollow casting methods or interior armatures to reduce overall weight. Examining the base or truncation generally reveals the internal composition of the sculpture.
