What is a lamp table?

A lamp table is a small occasional table designed specifically to hold a table lamp next to seating. Its compact dimensions allow it to fit into corners or beside chairs without dominating the room. These pieces function equally well as display surfaces for decorative items or as convenient landing spots for everyday objects.

How do I date a wooden table?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods, and stylistic details such as inlay patterns or leg turnings. Edwardian pieces often feature delicate mahogany and marquetry, whereas 1930s examples lean towards figured veneers and geometric forms. Secondary woods used in the interior structure also provide clues to the period of manufacture.

Where should I place a square table?

A square top sits comfortably in the corner of a room or flush against a sofa arm. The symmetrical proportions make it adaptable for narrow spaces where round tables might leave awkward gaps. Pairing a square lamp table with matching armchairs creates a balanced arrangement in a sitting room.

Are these tables solid wood?

Construction varies between solid timbers like oak and mahogany, and carcases finished with decorative wood veneers. Art Deco pieces frequently employ highly figured veneers over a stable core to showcase dramatic grain patterns. Both solid and veneered methods represent authentic period manufacturing techniques.
