What is the difference between a letter opener and a page turner?

Letter openers are shorter blades designed specifically for slicing open envelopes and folded correspondence. Page turners feature longer, wider blades intended for handling delicate paper pages in books without tearing them. Many antique desk items combine both functions into a single tool, allowing the owner to open post and read bound volumes using one implement.

How do I date a silver letter knife?

Dating relies primarily on the hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver mount or blade. These marks indicate the assay office, the standard of silver, and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture. Stylistic indicators such as Art Deco enamel work or Edwardian monogramming also help narrow down the production era when marks are rubbed.

Are novelty silver letter knives usable?

Novelty openers shaped as animals or figures remain entirely functional for daily desk use. The sturdy sterling silver construction handles modern paper and envelopes without issue. Care should be taken with pieces incorporating fragile organic handles like tortoiseshell or thin mother-of-pearl to prevent accidental chipping.

What materials accompany the silver on these pieces?

Silversmiths frequently paired silver with natural materials such as tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, horn, and agate. Some examples include decorative elements like guilloche enamel, citrine, and Connemara marble. Twentieth-century pieces occasionally utilise alternative substances including celluloid and ebonised wood alongside silver-plated components.
