What is an albert chain?

An albert chain is a specific style of pocket watch chain designed to be worn across the front of a waistcoat. It typically secures to a buttonhole in the centre and drops down to hold a pocket watch in a lower pocket. Attached pieces like fobs, medals, or sovereign cases hang from the middle of the chain. These accessories served both practical and decorative purposes for Victorian and Edwardian gentlemen.

How do I wear a vintage fob?

You can wear these pieces attached to a traditional pocket watch chain or suspended from a modern necklace chain as a pendant. Many collectors adapt heavier albert chains to be worn directly around the neck as statement jewellery. The substantial weight and length of sterling silver chains make them versatile for contemporary styling while retaining their historic character.

What do sovereign cases hold?

Sovereign cases were manufactured to store British gold sovereign and half-sovereign coins safely in the pocket. They feature tight spring mechanisms that keep the coins secure until needed for transactions. Today, these cases survive as intricate pocket items, sometimes combined with vesta compartments for matches or engraved with presentation dates.

How are these silver pieces dated?

Makers relied on official hallmarks stamped directly into the silver to record the year of production and the assay office responsible. Letters correspond to specific years, while town marks like the anchor for Birmingham or three wheat sheaves for Chester identify the location. Engravings on medals and shields also provide direct dates for presentation items, often marking military service or sporting achievements.
