How were haberdashery cabinets used?

Haberdashery cabinets served behind the drapery counter to keep small sewing goods, ribbons, and fastenings organised and clean. Shop assistants pulled out shallow trays to show options directly to customers. Today, these drawer-heavy units suit modern homes for storing collections, jewellery, or stationery while maintaining a distinct utilitarian aesthetic.

What are epicerie steps?

Epicerie steps are tiered wooden shelving structures originating from European grocery shops. Merchants used the stepped levels to display dried goods and provisions clearly. In contemporary spaces, collectors utilise these stepped stands for exhibiting ceramics, plants, or small sculptures on tabletops.

How do I date a display cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the timber types, joinery techniques, and hardware used in the construction. Victorian pieces often feature heavy mahogany and hand-cut dovetails, whereas 1930s examples introduce chrome, aluminium, and streamlined Art Deco lines. Manufacturer plaques, patent stamps, and original advertising signwriting also provide precise chronological markers for commercial furnishings.

Where should I place a shop counter?

Shop counters work well as kitchen islands, room dividers, or reception surfaces due to their generous proportions and finished backs. Their durable timber tops and deep storage compartments offer practical daily utility. Placing them in open-plan areas allows the glazed fronts or banks of drawers to function as focal points in a room.
