What periods do these framed portraits represent?

The available selection spans several centuries, encompassing eighteenth-century works, Regency pieces, and nineteenth-century realism. Twentieth-century examples stretch through the Art Deco era and into the mid-century period. Buyers will find that each era introduces distinct aesthetic choices in both the portraiture and the surrounding woodwork, reflecting the interior fashions of the time.

How are different painting mediums housed?

Oil paintings on canvas or board are typically secured directly within sturdy wooden or gilt surrounds without glass. Works executed in pastel or watercolour require protective glass glazing to safeguard the delicate pigments on paper. Understanding the medium helps determine the correct environmental conditions required for displaying the piece safely in a home.

What subjects typically appear in these portraits?

The subjects range widely from formal human portraits of nobility and officers to informal studies of children and local figures. Animal portraits, including horses, dogs, and prize livestock, also feature prominently. This variety allows collectors to select pieces based on specific historical interests, sporting themes, or artistic styles.

How can I identify the age of a frame?

Age is determined by observing the construction materials, such as the composition of the gesso and the type of wood used in the backing and moulding. Stylistic indicators, such as Regency gilt work or Art Deco profiles, provide further clues to the manufacturing date. Examining fixings, corner joins, and surface wear helps confirm whether the surround is contemporary to the artwork it holds.
