What is a tallboy chest?

A tallboy chest is a vertical storage unit designed to hold clothes while taking up less floor space than a traditional wide chest of drawers. These pieces typically feature multiple stacked drawers rising higher than standard chests, offering substantial storage capacity within a compact footprint.

How do I date an oak chest?

Dating an oak chest involves examining the construction methods, handle types, timber characteristics, and overall style conventions of the period. Details such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary wood usage, and specific decorative motifs like linenfold or carved grotesques help place a piece within eras from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy fits well in bedrooms, dressing rooms, or hallways where vertical storage is required without sacrificing excessive floor area. Because of their height, positioning them against a sturdy wall ensures stability while making efficient use of vertical room proportions.

Limed oak is a treated wood finish where a pale or white substance is rubbed into the open grain of the oak timber. This technique highlights the natural texture of the wood while imparting a lighter, decorative colour tone often found on twentieth-century pieces.
