How do I date a vintage mirror frame?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction methods, and the characteristics of the glass plate itself. Earlier pieces often utilise hand-cut joinery and heavy gesso ornamentation, whereas twentieth-century examples introduce simpler profiles and modern backing screws. Examining the rebate behind the glass and the wear on the frame surface provides further clues to the manufacturing decade.

What is an overmantel mirror used for?

An overmantel mirror is traditionally hung directly above a fireplace to reflect light and visually expand the proportions of a room. Because of their horizontal width and decorative crests, they anchor the wall space above a hearth. In period interiors, they also served to bounce candlelight and firelight across the drawing room during evening hours.

How should I hang a heavy giltwood frame?

Large carved timber and gesso frames require secure wall fixings distributed across sturdy anchor points rather than relying on a single picture wire. Wall studs or heavy-duty masonry plugs ensure the weight is supported safely without straining the historic mitres. Professional mirror installers often utilise French cleats to keep large overmantels flush and stable against the plaster.

What is foxed mirror glass?

Foxed mirror glass refers to the natural degradation of the backing silver over decades, resulting in dark speckles and cloudy patches. This chemical ageing process causes the reflection to soften rather than appearing starkly uniform. Many collectors prize genuine foxed mercury plates because they prove the high age and authenticity of the mirror.
