How do I safely rewire an antique metal desk lamp?

Older desk lamps require modern electrical flex and earth connections to comply with current safety standards. A qualified electrician can replace internal wiring while preserving original lampholders and switches. Ensure the internal cord grip remains secure to prevent strain on the new cable where it enters the metal base or stem.

What bulb wattage should I use in these vintage desk lights?

Original metal shades and smaller fittings were designed for lower wattage incandescent bulbs or modern low-heat LED alternatives. Using high-wattage traditional bulbs can overheat old brass or bakelite fittings. Check the interior of the shade or the lampholder for stamped manufacturer limits regarding maximum bulb size.

How do I clean patinated brass and bronze?

Dust surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth to preserve the historical finish. Avoid harsh metal polishes that strip away the aged patination valued by collectors. If the metal requires more thorough cleaning, use a mild soap solution on a damp cloth, drying the piece immediately to prevent water spotting.

How can I tell a nineteen-thirties chrome lamp from a later reproduction?

Interwar pieces exhibit heavier gauge metal, solid cast iron weights inside the base, and traditional fastening methods like threaded brass screws rather than modern spot welding. Examine the electrical components, switch types, and wear patterns on the underside of the base to confirm period manufacture.
