What subjects appear in these paintings?

The artworks encompass a diverse range of subjects, including coastal seascapes, equine studies of horses and ponies, architectural townscapes, and intimate portraits. Artists across different decades interpreted these themes through distinct lenses, moving from nineteenth-century realism toward twentieth-century modernism and abstract impressionism.

How do I care for an oil painting on canvas?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to protect the canvas and the oil pigments from degradation. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using liquid cleaners or chemical solvents on the painted areas.

How can I date an older canvas?

Dating relies on examining the stretcher frames, the weave and preparation of the canvas, the pigments used, and any signatures or inscriptions on the reverse. Stylistic markers and framing techniques also offer reliable clues regarding the period in which the artwork was created.

What is the difference between board and canvas supports?

Canvas provides a flexible, woven surface stretched over a wooden frame, which yields slightly under the touch of a brush. Board offers a rigid, inflexible support that prevents the paint layer from flexing, often utilised for smaller sketches or plein air studies.
