Are these frames easy to assemble?

Most antique wooden and metal frames utilise traditional bolt-together side rails that connect the headboard and footboard. Having two people simplifies the process of aligning the heavy components. Ensure you retain or source appropriate metal bolts and spanners that match the threading of the period fixings.

How do I care for wooden frames?

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional high-grade beeswax to nourish timber surfaces like walnut and mahogany. Avoid placing the bed near direct heat sources to prevent wood splitting. Protect painted or limed finishes by avoiding harsh chemical cleaning agents that can strip the original surface treatment.

Can I use standard mattresses?

Many vintage frames accept standard contemporary mattress sizes, though slight size variations can occur in nineteenth-century continental pieces. Measuring the internal width and length precisely prevents compatibility issues. Slatted wooden bases can be added safely to support modern pocket-sprung or foam mattresses without altering the antique frame.
