What are Staffordshire mantel dogs?

Staffordshire mantel dogs are ceramic figures, most commonly spaniels, produced in England during the nineteenth century. People placed them on fireplace mantelpieces as decorative ornaments. They were often made in mirrored pairs to sit at either end of a shelf. These figures depict various breeds such as spaniels, pugs, greyhounds, and poodles.

How do I style mantel ornaments?

These earthenware figures suit narrow shelves, sideboards, and fireplace mantels where their flat backs allow them to sit flush against a wall. Pairing them symmetrically creates a traditional arrangement. Mixing animal figures with portrait groups adds visual variety to a display. Collectors often arrange them in pairs just as Victorian households did.

What periods do these pieces span?

The items originate primarily from the nineteenth century, encompassing the Victorian era between eighteen sixty and nineteen hundred. Dates within this span reflect the manufacturing periods recorded for Staffordshire pottery. Specific decades appear in the evidence from eighteen sixty through to nineteen hundred. The styles remain consistent with English traditional folk art of the Victorian period.
