What is in a complete set?

A standard set includes a hand mirror, hair brush and clothes brush, often accompanied by matching glass powder jars and scent bottles. Larger vanity ensembles add manicure instruments and button hooks. Some examples extend to larger bedroom suites containing dressing tables, matching stools and wardrobes designed in a unified style.

How do I date enamel pieces?

Silver mounts carry hallmarks that indicate the assay office, standard mark and date letter for the exact year of manufacture. Enamel styles also shift over time, moving from Edwardian floral motifs to geometric Art Deco patterns by the nineteen thirties. Examining the construction of the mirror glass and the backing plates helps confirm the period of manufacture.

Were these made for travel?

Certain sets were specifically engineered for transit, housed in fitted leather cases with secure compartments for each bottle and brush. These travelling pieces feature robust screw tops or collars to prevent leakage. Most domestic dressing table sets, however, were intended to remain stationary on a bedroom surface.

How should I clean silver and glass?

Silver components require gentle cleaning with a specialised non-abrasive polish to preserve hallmarks and delicate engraving. Care must be taken to avoid getting polish on enamel or mirror backing plates. Glass vessels and jars wash safely in warm soapy water, provided stopper grounds and cork liners are kept dry.
